A group of Saints’ Community Coaches have ventured into the unknown, taking the Saints and Rugby League into the nearby area of Chorley.
The joint venture between the Club and the Service Areas of St Helens and Lancashire saw schoolchildren learning to the basics behind the game.
Matt Daniels, St Helens Service Area Coordinator and Saints Community Development Manager said: “We joined up to promote St Helens rugby to the children of Chorley who traditionally wouldn’t support Saints. It’s about widening our appeal.”
Taking part were a small selection of kids aged under 12, ranging from 7- to 11-years-old.
Some of them also played for Chorley Panthers Under 12s team, whose clubhouse and playing field were host for this event.
The activities of the day included fun ways of perfecting passing, kicking and tackling techniques with endurance tests being included to test their ability.
On completion, the kids received certificates to confirm that they had participated in and successfully completed a day of training with Saints Community Coaches.
They also gratefully received posters of the Saints team – and even the Wigan fans were happy to accept!
After the event, Community Coach Paul Foster said: “The kids loved it today. They told me that they had taken part in schemes like this before that were run by Wigan, but that it was nowhere near as good. They also said it only lasted about two hours and we had them active all day.
“It’s nice to know that we can give so much to kids who aren’t even in our local community. Also I feel good knowing we’re better at coaching than the Wigan lot!”
Another Community Coach, Adam Daniels added: “When you go into other areas you never know what to expect. Fewer kids show up and the kids that do take part don’t usually support the team you represent so it means you have to go the extra mile.
“What was good today was that a few of the lads that showed up in Wigan shirts said they like Saints a lot more now, so we know we’re making an impact in areas other than St Helens.”
