Saints in Malawi

Shaun McManus, son of Saints’ Chairman Eamonn, has recently spent four months as a volunteer teacher at Matiti Primary School, Zomba, Malawi during a year off between school and university.

Shaun, 19, finished his A Levels at Manchester Grammar School last year and then worked as a labourer for six months on the building of new club houses at Thatto Heath and Clock Face RL club before heading off to Malawi for four months earlier this year.

His trip was organised through Africa and Asia Ventures Ltd, which specialises in gap year assignments. At Matiti, he taught classes of more than 100 children and high on the list of subjects which he taught was the introduction of Rugby League into games lessons and a history of St Helens Rugby League Club.

We have won more than a few new supporters in what is definitely not a Rugby League heartland!

Shaun was overwhelmed by the warmth and openness of the pupils and teachers. Malawi is the third poorest country in the world but he found only warmth and respect throughout the school and the country. Shaun lived without electricity or running water and contracted malaria twice during his stay.

He nevertheless found his stay the most uplifting and rewarding experience of his life.
