Our Town, Our Saints is a new book that depicts the historical significance of St Helens Rugby League Club and the town it is an integral part of.

Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund under their Young Roots Programme, it celebrates the varied and exciting heritage of the club.

The project has been a collaboration between the award winning Saints Community Development Foundation, St Helens RLFC, local schools and colleges led by St Cuthbert’s College for Business and Enterprise and The Prince’s Trust.

Saints’ Historian Alex Service has been the project manager.

8000 copies have been distributed across the community and schools will now be using Our Town, Our Saints as a resource to stimulate projects in school focusing on heritage, literacy and numeracy.

Alex Service said: “As Saints’ fans, we all have our particular memories of the team and its achievements over the years. Indeed, some years will have particular poignancy for us, like 2006, when the team won three trophies and it is always interesting to see what other events happened during the year on a local, national and global scale.

“Thanks to the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund, the booklet contains a selection of years that have been important in Saints’ history, with additional information provided by pupils of St. Cuthbert’s High School, who spent time asking about peoples’ memories. It is meant to stimulate and encourage further debate and research about those years in question.”

Chairman of SCDF Kel Coslett added: “I have many great memories to savour of this town but it is important that we capture our heritage for generations to come. Thanks to the foresight and backing of the Heritage Lottery Fund, this project has shown that young people are interested in their community heritage when they are given the right stimulus. In this town the Saints are just that.”
