Community Awards Night

Saints Community Development Foundation hosted the Annual Community Awards last Saturday at The Totally Wicked Stadium in a special night to congratulate those in our community.

Tommy Makinson, Luke Thompson and Luke Douglas all took to the stage to present our winners with their awards.

Nicola Egerton received the first award of the night for Saints Community Development Foundation Coach of the Year. She has worked tirelessly to grow her cheerleading and dance programmes all throughout 2018. Her upbeat personality has been infectious, she is a joy to be around both as a participant of her groups and a colleague.

Denton Arnold received the award for Match Official Of The Year. Denton received this award for his overall commitment and professionalism to the sport. He consistently performs at a high level.

Educational Coach Of The Year Award goes to Michael Owen from Carmel College. Michael has been invaluable in his support this year, he has seen the joint programme grow into our fantastic Learning Difficulty Rugby League Team through his hard work and commitment.

The Rugby League Community Heroes Award went to Phil Anders, John Reese and John Aspinall.   This award is to recognise individuals who work tirelessly in our community, both to push and support the great game of Rugby League. Although we have many great volunteers who do a fantastic job, these people we feel have really stood out in 2018.

Billy Vaughn received The Clubs Volunteer of The Year Award. He received this award for his involvement with the Portico Club. Not only is he heavily involved with Portico he also volunteers at Burtonwood Cemetery where he looks after military war graves as well as working in his grandson’s nursery where he carries out general maintenance and gardening sessions with the children. His overall support and commitment to the sport and our community is second to none.

Paul Gartland picked up two awards for Coach Of The Year and Team Of The Year which went to his team Blackbrook U18’s. His team Blackbrook U18’s has won it all in 2018; The National Cup, Lancashire Cup and a Premier Division Title. Paul’s focus is on contentment and togetherness, rather than winning at all costs. Paul went on to say “By focusing on allowing the young players to enjoy themselves and providing a comfortable platform, the players themselves are able to be the conductor of their own symphony” he also added “I don’t flog them at training, I don’t shout and scream, Its about having a laugh and playing well comes with that sometimes. If they’re under pressure, they don’t tend to try as hard in my opinion”

Phil Smith Received the Unsung Hero Award. Phil has been a part of the St.Helens Referees Society where he has been a key figure over many years, and is also a founder member of the St Helens Service Area Committee. He works continuously hard with all community clubs to provide support and guidance.

Kev Thompson received the final award of the evening, for Outstanding Service To Rugby League. Kev as had a lifetime of volunteering and coaching. His time at Haydock where they won their first NWC Premier Title under him. Also coaching at Thatto Heath U18’s in his time. Since he’s stopped coaching Kev works tirelessly for the club off the field.

Saints Community Development Foundation would like to say a huge thank you to those that attended our Annual Community Awards Night, we would also like to thank Tommy Makinson, Luke Thompson and Luke Douglas for joining us and helping us present the awards.
