Thousands of Welsh School children were visited by the RFL’s RESPECT campaign in the build-up to the engage Super League Millennium Magic event.

Community Development personnel from engage Super League clubs – including Saints’ own Carl Edwards – visited schools throughout South and West Wales to stage a series of assemblies and special sessions to communicate the principles behind RESPECT and also pass on important lifestyle messages.

First launched in 2005, RESPECT is an all-encompassing code that emphasises Rugby League’s highly prized values of sportsmanship, discipline, fair play, tolerance and inclusiveness.

The campaign and the associated lifestyle education messages are regularly passed on to a wide range of young people by engage Super League club Community Development staff.

With an entire round of engage Super League fixtures coming to Wales, the RFL wanted to give Welsh youngsters the chance to benefit from this valuable project and whet their appetites for the feast of Rugby League that is available to them over the forthcoming May Bank Holiday.

The RFL’s Community Marketing Manager Adam Jude said: “We are delighted to be taking Rugby League’s RESPECT campaign to Wales in the build-up to the 2008 engage Super League Millennium Magic event.

“We believe it will be highly productive for all the schools involved and hopefully will also promote the excitement and values of our sport to thousands of young people.

“The engage Super League club staff involved are all extremely enthusiastic about the project and can’t wait to get started”.

Community Development personnel will be visiting schools in Cardiff, Bridgend, Swansea, Llanelli, Newport and the Valleys as well as coaching at all Welsh Conference clubs.
