Newton Storm ARLFC under 10s team completed a sponsored walk last Friday in order to raise money for their upcoming tour to London in July.
The players and parents walked more than five miles from their home at Newton Sports Club, Newton-le-Willows, to the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington, where they arrived just in time for kick off for the Warrington Wolves v St Helens game.
The fundraising event was made even more special as the walkers were joined by Steve Prescott and his son Taylor – who both managed to complete the distance, with Steve still recovering from his successful London Marathon less than two week earlier.
U10’s Coach Malc Hankey said: “Early indications are that we raised more than £1,000 which is a great achievement and puts us well on the way to our target of £3,000 for the London tour.
“I would like to thank everyone who took part in the walk, all the people who sponsored one of the players and a special thank you to Steve and Taylor for accompanying us on the day. As we all know, Steve is extremely busy with his own fundraising activities and it was greatly appreciated that he takes a few hours out of his schedule to do something like this for Newton Storm.”
It was also a bit of a shock for some of the players when they bumped into Jon Wilkin en route, who was waiting for a lift in Winwick. He was adamant that Saints hadn’t made him get the bus to the game!
