Rugby League is Streets Ahead in Knowsley

23rd May 2008, 9:16am

The North Huyton Street Games at the King George V Sports Complex provided an excellent platform for a grand Rugby League Tag Festival.

The event, which was organised by Rugby League Development Officer Kath Miller, was attended and staffed by the St Helens RL Club Community Team and members of Huyton Bulldogs RL Club and was a huge success with more than 60 children from the local schools gaining their first taste of competitive Rugby League.

As well as participating in the games the children were treated to coaching sessions and a chance to have their photograph taken with the World Club Challenge which the Saints team kindly brought along with them.

Winners of the Tournament were St Columba’s RC School who beat St Brigid’s in a very closely matched final.

There was a wealth of talent on show and all children are being offered the chance to continue playing Rugby League at the newly formed Huyton Bulldogs Rugby League Club which is based at the King George V sports complex in Huyton.

Development Officer Kath says: “Today has been a great day where everyone had chance to play a sport which they had very little knowledge of. I would like to offer our sincere thanks to Tim and his crew for making it a day to remember for all involved.

“All the children seemed to have a great time and hopefully this will lead to increased numbers at the local Rugby Club.

“I am aware that transport may be an issue for many children attending training sessions especially those from Stockbridge Village and I am in negotiations with the four Primary Schools in the area to provide a satellite club sited at one of the schools for all children who want to play Rugby League to attend as an after schools club.”

Anyone who is interested in expanding the game in the Knowsley area or wants to be involved with this exciting venture should contact Kath on 07825 145105 or e-mail on kath.miller@knowsley.gov.uk
