A gloriously hot summer’s day welcomed fans to the GPW Recruitment Stadium this morning as supporters young and old bought their tickets for Saints’ date with destiny.
As Daniel Anderson’s charges look for their third win on the trot – a club record – hundreds queued up to back their heroes at Wembley.
Louise Gaul from Saintsrlfc.com took time out to chat to the fans and asked them their thoughts on the season so far, their star player and what it’s like to be in the final for the third time.
Trevor, fan for 60 yrs:
“This season has been very good. I’ve been to all the home games and some away; I love them.
“My star player this season is James Graham. It’s hard to choose just one but I think he’s really done his work this season; he’s worked harder than any other player in the team!
“All teams are supposed to be equal now, so it’s unbelievable we’re in the final again. Unbelievable!”
Hannah, Emma and Sarah, fans for four years:
“It’s been a good season. It’s been a closer season than previous years but that’s made it more exciting.
“For me, it’s Keiron Cunningham. I think he’s pulled the team through and together. He’s just great!
“It’s brilliant that we’re in the final again. We went last year and it was great, so there was no way we were going to miss it this year.”
Peter, fan since 1958:
“It’s been a pretty good season apart from the injuries at the beginning.
“Without a doubt the star player is Ade Gardner. He’s by far the most improved player and I think that’s in the Super League all round. The missus thinks James Graham and granted he’s played brilliantly at times but for me it’s definitely Gardner.
“I’m hoping this time I actually get to the final. Last year I had my tickets and everything, hotel was booked, and then I took ill so I missed it. The wife still went mind! But yes, hopefully I’ll make it this time. It’ll be a cracking game that will.”
Brian, fan for 52yrs:
“Brilliant, isn’t it? You can’t beat this; finals every year! Magic.
“There’ve been a few stars this season. I think James Graham, Keiron Cunningham and I think Longy’s coming back again too. That James Graham I’m very impressed with. For a young lad to knock the big ones over is hard work but he’s doing it. It takes some doing for a prop-forward.
“It’s brilliant! I can’t wait for next year! I’m getting used to this. I went last year and it was just magic. We booked the hotel this year three months ago; we just knew we’d be back in the final, and I think that’s what we’ll do next year too. Fingers crossed for the weather!”
David, fan for 20yrs:
“I think it’s gone reasonably well so far, some little hiccups in the beginning and some sore losers but they seem to have picked it up and pulled it together now. The team seem to be playing as one now; a good back-up with good squad players. The injuries at the beginning didn’t help but now that most players are back we seem to going from strength to strength with plenty of new people in the wings to come in.
“I think several players have been very strong. Cunningham’s come back on form, Long’s back on form and Graham’s had an exceptional season. He didn’t do so well last year, probably the fame came to him a bit early, but he’s certainly knuckled down now and with that Man of the Match on Saturday he’s proved he’s back on form again too. All the tries were up the middle on Saturday which proves that the strength is in the pack and we seem to be doing very well for it.
“Well, I go to the final no matter who’s playing, but it’s great when St Helens are there because they really prove their worth. I’m just glad they’ll be there this year because it should be an excellent final; we’ll definitely give them a good game. It would have been good to have had Leeds there too of course, but still, we’ll enjoy it.
“I think Hull will give the lads a good game for about half an hour but the strength of St Helens and the game plan will come into play and they’ll take them out. Probably with about a thirty point gap I should think! Well let’s hope so.”
Alison, fan for 30yrs:
“It’s great this season, isn’t it? We’ve done really, really well. Our team’s great! I love all the Wigan games, they’re the highlight of the season for me and we’ve won them all. The run up to the cup has been great as well, been some great matches. I missed the semi-final, which was gutting, but we’d booked to go to Dublin so we traipsed round Dublin centre on Saturday looking for a pub that was playing it. We managed to find one so we enjoyed the game with a nice pint of Guinness.
“It’s so difficult to choose one player, but I’d have to say Sean Long. He’s the playmaker and I absolutely adore him! And Wellens as well, he’s amazing.
“It’s fantastic that we’re in the final again. Hope the weather keeps up and it stays like this and doesn’t go against us, but yeah it’s fantastic. Keep it up boys!”
Lesley, fan for 20yrs:
“It was a slow start this season but people have peaked at the right points and now we’re in fine shape to beat them Yorkshire puddings! The Wigan match stands out for me, I never miss them, and the semi-final too. It was a great atmosphere on Saturday.
“We go all over the country with them. We’ve been to London, Catalan, all over the place. There’s a big family of us that follow them everywhere. We’re buying thirty tickets for the final! The ladies behind the tills say “oh no, not you again” we buy that many and get them all confused every year.
“Keiron Cunningham is my star player, always will be. He’s stepped his game up this year though I think. And Ade Gardner. You can’t forget the top try scorer!”
“What do I think about being in the final three years on the run? Costly! But aside from that it’s awesome. We never miss the big games and we just can’t wait to get to Wembley. Dead excited, all of us are.”
