Harlequins Reserve Championship Team 52 v 18 St Helens Reserve Championship Team
By Graham Henthorne, Team Manager
The Reserves arrived at the Stoop on Sunday knowing that a win against a much improved Quins side would lift them back into second place in the table and put them on course for the top spot.
What happened in the next 80 minutes was scarcely recognisable as the type of performance that this team has put together this season.
Alex Asher put a foot into touch in Saints’ first attack of the game but the Reserves would fine themselves 10 – 0 down before they threatened the home try line again.
Kurt Haggerty made a break down the middle passed it out to Paul Johnson who was caught by the fullback. Two penalties later and Jamie Ellis put Andrew Dixon in at the left corner. A fine touchline conversion by the metronomic boot of Jamie Foster had the Saints camp thinking that maybe this was the springboard.
This optimism was reinforced by a good set after Quins had sent the restart dead on the full but Sam Thompson knocked on over the line. The fledgling recovery was put to rest with three more home tries in the last ten minutes of the half.
Thankfully all three tries were unconverted leaving the saints only 16 points in arrears at the break.
Hope sprang again in the opening minutes of the second half as Dean McGilvray scored the first of his brace. A booming up and under from Haggerty was fumbled by the home side and quick hands saw the centre over in the left corner. Foster again converted and the Reserves were still in with a sniff.
The Saints should have pulled the gap back to four points but Phil Baines chose to pass instead of having a dart at the line himself and the chance was lost.
With this chance the Saints resistance crumbled and the defence let in six more tries, three of which were long range interceptions, to fall to their worst defeat of the season. The procession of home tries was split by Dean McGilvray’s second of the afternoon.
This leaves the Reserves bizarrely hoping for a Wigan win on Saturday against the Rhinos. This, provided that they have won on Wednesday night away at bottom of the table Castleford, would mean that a victory at Huddersfield on Saturday would give the Reserves the League Leaders title and the easier trip through the playoffs.
