RFL Appoint New Non-Executive Director

1st Oct 2008, 3:19pm

The RFL Board has appointed Clare Morrow, the former ITV Controller of Programmes North to the Board of Directors.

Clare is the first woman director of the RFL and The Board’s nomination will need to be ratified at the next Council meeting in December

She joins as a Non-Executive Director, replacing Ian Edwards who stood down from his position earlier this year.

Mother of three Morrow is currently Chair of the Yorkshire Tourist Board, having previously spent 15 years at ITV Yorkshire.  She joined the broadcaster in 1992 as News Producer and within nine years was Controller of Programmes in Yorkshire before becoming Controller of Programmes across the north, which included ITV Yorkshire, Granada, Tyne Tees Central and Border.

During her time at ITV, the 48-year-old Cambridge graduate also held the position of Head of Sport and was responsible for Yorkshire Television’s Rugby League output for many years.  This included the creation, development and production of the Rugby League Raw series of programmes which won several national Royal Television Society sports awards.

Clare said: “As the first woman to be appointed to the RFL Board I believe I will provide a fresh pair of eyes to a sport that is certainly going places.  I will bring to the RFL a wealth of media experience and expertise in how perceptions can be changed. I have followed Rugby League throughout my life and regularly attend games and cup finals.

“Rugby League has changed considerably in recent years from how many still perceive the sport to be.  I am confident that with my contacts and experience I will be able to assist in continuing to improve the image of the sport.  One area I am keen to look at is how new technologies can improve the relationships we have with fans.”

As well as sharing her media experience with the RFL, Morrow will also add a huge knowledge of work in equality and diversity.  She is currently working on a project with Sky TV and other broadcasters to encourage better portrayal of disability within sports programming.

She added: “Throughout my career I have been committed to equality and diversity and have led a number of programmes in various organisations.  I think this will be a valuable asset in this new role as Rugby League aims to engage with more communities and open up new horizons.”

Richard Lewis, the RFL’s Executive Chairman, said: “We are very excited to appoint Clare as the RFL’s first female Non-Executive Director and I am sure the RFL Council will be delighted we have found someone with such relevant knowledge.  She has a huge wealth of experience in the world of television with the BBC and ITV and her career to date shows that she can be classed as a superb leader.

“She has great strategic knowledge of working in complex organisations, such as the RFL who have to work with a number of partners and stakeholders.  We believe she will be an asset to the RFL Board and as the first female to take such a position will offer a new perspective on things.”

As well as being the Chair of the Yorkshire Tourist Board, Claire also sits on the Board of the West Yorkshire Playhouse and the University of Bradford’s Industrial Advisory Board.

At the RFL she will join the four existing Board members – Executive Chairman Richard Lewis, Chief Executive Nigel Wood and Non-Executive Directors Maurice Watkins and Bob Stott.
