Academy Have Fun in the Sun

19th Apr 2009, 12:38pm

St Helens Academy 46 v 22 Castleford Tigers Academy

By Graham Henthorne, Team Manager

Nine tries in the afternoon sun was too much for the visitors from Castleford as the Academy continued their improvement on Saturday.

In the first set Josh Greaves ploughed through some fragile tackling to go 50 metres setting the tone for the rest of the day with fellow props Anthony Walker and Rob Murphy gaining great the field position.

Adam Tatlock opened the scoring for the Saints tip-toeing down the sideline and beating two on his way to the corner. Jonny Lomax’s touchline conversion, the first of five, gave full value to the try.

The Tigers briefly rallied capitalising on a Saints knock-on to pick up and score but three tries in a ten minute period killed them off.

A big hit from Walker and Joe Molyneux won possession and as the ball was whipped out to the right debutant winger Nathan Ashe stepped inside the cover to score his first in Saints colours.

Lee Gaskell’s raking touch finder after a penalty allowed Jonny Lomax to be held up at the line. Molyneux’s quick pass at the play the ball gave Ashe an easy stroll into the corner.

Gaskell again showed his class in possession as he ghosted through the defence on halfway to put Ashe away. His overhead ball back inside was patted forward and then back into Lomax’s grateful hands to give Jonny a simple score.

The heat took its toll a little and the energy levels dipped as the half wore on but another big Gaskell penalty touch finder put Saints in reach as halftime approached. Tom Makinson had a dart for the line foiled but Scott Hale used his height to good effect and reached out to score.

The Tigers upped their work rate in the second half and were rewarded with two tries in the first ten minutes to get within spitting distance of the Saints. In between Tom Makinson had squeezed in at the corner to keep the Saints three scores ahead.

The final quarter belonged to the Saints. Lomax and Hale both got their second’s, good work by Wakefield fed Tatlock to again go tip-toeing down the sideline before committing the full back and feeding Scott, and Gaskell finished off Aaron Lloyd’s 60 yard break.

The side is steadily improving week in week out and although shipping more points than Coach Derek Traynor would like, is starting to gel. There is pace out wide, guile in the middle and a pack willing to work hard, which was epitomised by today’s Men of the Match Dave Pike and Danny Hunter.
