St Helens Academy 78 v 10 Harlequins Academy
By Graham Henthorne, Team Manager
A fourteen try demolition of the visitors from the capital kept alive the Academy’s slim hopes of a place in the play-offs.
Scoring at virtually a point a minute the Academy were out of sight before the visitors troubled the scoreboard.
Nathan Ashe opened the scoring with the first of his hat-trick before Tom Fry scored his first for the club on his first start.
Two tries from Captain Joe Molyneux kept the scoreboard ticking and a Ben Karalius effort signalled the end of the scoring for the Saints for the first half.
Although the Quins are bottom of the table and without a win they gave the Saints a hard game earlier in the season in London. Given the injury and illness ravaged team that took the field on Saturday the coaching staff were very pleased with the first half display. What happened in the second period gave them much hope for the future and went a big way to exorcising the ghosts of the final 15 minutes from the Wakefield game last week.
There was no hint of the point fest in the opening sets of the second half as Quins kept the saints at bay but as soon as Tommy Makinson went in on 50 minutes the flood gates opened.
Nine tries later and Quins were well and truly beaten.
There were tries for Danny Hunter, Adam Tatlock on his return from long term injury, a brace from Tom Makinson, two for Nathan Ashe to complete his hat-trick, Anthony Walker and a first try at this level for Jordan O’Neill. The pick of the bunch, from Tommy Johnson giving him a personal tally of 26 points, was started by a break from the impressive Ant Walker. From the play the ball the ball was whipped across the line through many hands to put Johnson in.
However, amidst all the points the defining point for Derek Traynor and his coaching staff which sums up the attitude of this team and augurs so well for the future was a piece of defensive work. At 66 – 10 you may be excused for taking it a bit easy but not so Tommy Makinson. He chased a downfield kick fully 60 metres to tackle the Quins fullback in goal giving the Saints the drop out restart.
As you can imagine all played well but youngsters Callum Welsby, Joe Bate, Jordan O’Neill and Marcus Baines coming off the bench kept up the momentum of the starters with Ant Walker, Tommy Makinson and Joe Molyneux prominent.
