TOM Armstrong says 2009 has been a great experience.
The 19-year-old started the first four games of the season – scoring twice – before being replaced by Gary Wheeler.
“I have enjoyed the season,” he said. “I played the first four games and got told that someone else would have a go on the wing, which was fair enough.
“Mick pointed out where I had to improve and I have gone away and tried to do that. He [Mick] gave me the chance against Harlequins and I scored a try. It has been a good year. I didn’t expect to play many games – just one or two – so to do more is great.”
Tom says he is naturally a centre who can play on either side, but who can also play wing and at loose forward. He is close to returning to action with the reserves following a shoulder injury.
“My aim is just to keep working, keep my head down and get myself ready to come back into the first team when I am required. The coaching staff have put faith in the youth this season and we have done well.
“Sometimes injuries to the first team players are the only way you can get in, so when it happens you have to take the opportunities presented.”
Paul says: a very mature attitude for a young lad. Well done Tom.
OZ says: Well done Tom,
You will get your chance next season..!!!
The Youth policy at Saints is one of the best & there are a crop of players like Tom on the brink of the big time.
