Saints Turn on the Style to Trample the Wolves

On paper this was a fairly inexperienced side that turned out . Debutants and full debutants and key players still missing through injury made for an interesting mix of talents on show. How refreshing it is, therefore, that games of rugby aren’t won on paper as your Super Saints went on to prove your correspondent sadly out of touch with a commanding display.
Twam opened the account with the first of his brace finishing under the sticks after Foz had collected Chant’s deft last tackle chip and taken it to the line only to pass it 20 away from the posts to Twam (presumably to show off his kicking. Try letting Twam in on it next time Foz!!). The ever improving Matty Ashurst then strolled through a yawning gap off a sublime Jamie Ellis pass to score. Just to entertain the crowd the Junior Academy then decided to go to sleep for five minutes letting the Wolves in for two tries, the last a 50 metre interception. Captain Clurgy decided that enough was enough and restored normality with a trademark jink from dummy half taking him 45 metres to the fullback. He then drew him and put Twam in at the corner. Foz, obviously needing the practice (see earlier shenanigans) missed with the touchline effort to leave the Saints 16 – 12 up at the break.
The second half was a story of progressive dominance not letting the increasingly frustrated Wolves in with a sniff. Chant got up to score (replacing his head back on his shoulders in the process) being put through a gap by Clurgy after good work down the left from debutant Kurt Haggerty (I’ve seen that name somewhere before!). He then returned the favour for Haggy as he put up a stupendous up and under that the full back got fingertips to but bounced into Kurt’s grateful hands. Haggerty again continued his impressive debut being held up over the line. Matty Ashurst then drove to the line before the ball was spread right bringing Foz back round on a set move to score by the sticks. By now it was one way traffic. Karl Ashall got in on the act diving in at dummy half. The scoring was finished when Foz got his second ducking under the tackles (need I say more!) to squeeze through to the line. His immaculate second half boot converted all.
It’s easy to forget his contribution when the tries are scored by others but Clurgy put in another Captains performance today. Marshalling his troops and being a right royal pain in the you know what to the defence with his darting runs. Close on his heels were Matty Ashurst and the ever reliable 80 minute man himself Dicko. An inspection of the team sheet will show the absence of Sean Magennis. Sidelined apparently due to still suffering with cramp from last weeks game with Bradford!
