St Helens Reserve Team 70 v 16 Wakefield Wildcats Reserve Team
A thirteen try demolition from the Saints Reserves continued their unbeaten start to the season.
Despite losing the rock of last week’s performance, Captain Paul Leyland, early on due to injury the Saints had too much fire power for Wakefield.
Ste Tyrer opened the scoring in the first minute in the left corner from Matty Smiths’ miss pass and the points continued to flow in even time for the first half.
Matty Smith’s huge penalty kick to touch allowed Paul Johnson to score the first of his brace, Tyrer’s quick tapped restart finding the defence still retreating.
The visitors were finding the Saints pack too much to handle and good drives from Sam Thompson and Andrew Dixon put them back on their heels. The ball was spread left were Tyrer’s back of the hand pass to Dean McGilvray gave him an easy score in the corner.
Tyrer was on hand again to send Lee Cunliffe close to the line and from the quick play the ball Gary Wheeler teased the defence before shooting through a gap to score to the right of the posts. Tyrer’s second conversion made it 20 – 0 and the match was over as a contest.
These matches still need closing out, however, and the Saints showed the clinical edge to their game in continuing to pile up the points. McGilvray got his second after good work from Sam Thompson and Matty Smith, whose huge penalty to kick to touch again set up great field position for Liam Bland to show a clean pair of heels for his try.
The Saints were playing with a little flair by now and Smith put Tyrer through a yawning gap on our 40. The big centre was hauled down short but on the next play Kurt Haggerty shot through to score on the right.
The final score of the half came after Matty Smith again used the elements to great effect with a towering 40-20. From the resulting scrum, the ball was spread right and quick hands from Chris Frodsham saw Hully touch down in the right corner. Tyrer finished his involvement in the game with a majestic conversion to make it 42 – 0 at the break.
The second half started with the proverbial kick up the backside for all concerned with the red vee as Wakefield scored two converted tries in the first five minutes.
However, stern words from the coaching staff and four tries in eight minutes meant that normal service was quickly resumed. The speed of the play the ball had the Wildcats in problems all day and another quick one saw Haggy burst through down the right. He took it to the full back before putting a perfect ball out to his centre to give Jamie Foster a stroll in to the sticks. With Tyrer sunning himself on the bench Foster proceeded to convert his own try.
Four minutes later and Jamie scored his second dummying his way over after Chris Frodsham had been stopped short. In the next set Wheeler again attacked the line, jinked his way through and gave Haggerty a walk in for his second. Haggerty scored his hat-trick dribbling a Matty Smith grubber behind the line before gleefully pouncing on the bouncing ball.
Wakefield grabbed a late consolation but the final score was left to a Saint as Paul Johnson went in at the left corner. Foster’s fourth conversion gave him a victory in the personal duel with Tyrer and brought up the 70 point mark.
