RFL launches search for favourite Carnegie Challenge Cup memories

1st May 2008, 3:36pm

Ahead of the fifth round of this year’s Carnegie Challenge Cup, the RFL has launched a search to find the public’s most memorable moments from the 111 year old competition.

First played in 1897, the Carnegie Challenge Cup is Rugby League’s most historic and prestigious knockout competition and was first won by Batley who defeated St Helens 10-3 to lift one of the most widely recognised trophies in British sport.

Over the years a number of classic encounters have taken place between sides, creating many memories for players, coaches, supporters and the media alike. And now as the road to Wembley hots up once again the RFL is trying to find people’s most cherished memories from the competition.

Craig Spence, RFL Communications Manager, said: “Everyone will have a memorable moment from a game in the 111 year old Carnegie Challenge Cup and we’d like people to share them with us.

“It might be something exhilarating like Martin Offiah’s length of the field try for Wigan against Leeds in the ’94 final, something tragic like Don Fox’s missed conversion against Leeds in the 1968 Watersplash final, or something personal like a first visit to Wembley. Whatever your memory we’d like to hear from you.”

To log your most memorable Carnegie Challenge Cup moment, simply e-mail rflmedia@rfl.uk.com before 16 July and it will be posted in Challenge Cup section of the RFL website – www.therfl.co.uk. All entrants will also be put it in to a draw to win tickets to this year’s Carnegie Challenge Cup Final at Wembley on 30 August.

Once everyone’s memories have been posted on the website, the RFL will draw up a shortlist of the top five most memorable moments. The public will then be invited to vote for their favourite Carnegie Challenge Cup memory of all time with the most memorable unveiled on cup final day.

Tickets for Saints' fifth round tie against Warrington are now on sale from www.saintssuperstore.com
