Saints Gillette Champions Academy team notched up their third win of the season with an impressive away victory at Wakefield.
In front of a ‘party-like’ partisan crowd and a physical and hostile team, they ran in seven tries to win 34-10.
Alongside an excellent attacking performance, this win was also testimony to the youngsters’ defence.
Leading 18-0 in the first half, the Saint withstood five sets of six on their own line to repel wave after wave of Wakefield attack.
They then went the full length of the field to seal the win.
Dave Sutton grabbed a brace and there were also scores for Johnson, Foster, Waring, Ashall, Ashurst.
Foster also kicked three goals.
Player Performance Manager Neil Kilshaw said: “It was a great team performance typified by some excellent defence in what was a physical and hostile Wakefield team to face.
“Jamie Foster was devastating in attack on the right hand side and showed some neat footwork and offloads. Lee Gaskell and Ben Karalius paired for the first time at half back and controlled the game well. Gaskell’s kicking game was good and Ben – for his first game at this level – showed some great organisation.
“Once again, Andy Yates was immense up front and he just shaded Matty Ashurst for the man of the match award! Matty was terrific at loose forward and really showed the younger lads in the team the way to go.”
He continued: “Special mention also to the wingers – Sutton and Waring – for their safe hands, Danny Langtree who for only his second game was impressive, Warren Thompson and Steven Lucas.”
