Traynor and Ashurst Win Gillette Monthly Awards

7th Jul 2008, 10:00am

Saints’ Gillette Rugby League Academy are celebrating after two integral team members received awards.

17-year-old back row forward Matty Ashurst and Head Coach Derek Traynor won the Gillette Player and Coach of the Month Awards for May respectively.

Derek saw the team through home victories against Hull (28-22), Wigan (30-0), Widnes (52-4) and Leeds (60-10) and away at Wakefield (34-10).

Matty scored three tries in May and was consistently the hub in a pack that never stopped going forward in both defence and attack.

He has also been selected for the England Academy’s Tour of Australia later this month.

High Performance Manager, Mike Rush, said: “We are delighted for both Derek and Matty in receiving these awards from Gillette.

“It is particularly rewarding for Matty who doesn’t receive the recognition he deserves and who has performed consistently throughout some tough fixtures.”

He continues: “Derek is in his 12th year at the Club and his commitment to the team and to producing top quality youngsters is second to none.”

Meanwhile, scrum-half Jamie Ellis has been drafted into the England Academy Team to tour Oz.
