Wello Not Looking Too Far Ahead

8th Jul 2008, 2:39pm

Paul Wellens believes the competition in the engage Super League is as strong as ever.

Speaking ahead of Friday’s home game against Castleford he said: “Catalans have had time to adjust and have done fantastic. The players have become more experienced and are now running alongside the best in the competition.

“It will take time for the new teams next year to adjust (when Super League moves to 14 teams), but I think it is the right move for the game. I’m sure St Helens and the other clubs will benefit too.”

Wellens, 2006’s Man of Steel, also said that Saints are not looking past the next game even with the Carnegie Challenge Cup Semi Final against Leeds on the horizon.

“Of course we know what is achievable,” he continued. “We have the quality to win all three, but whilst we have been winning, we are continuing to prepare the best we can and not look too far ahead.

“We just want to finish in the top two to give us the best opportunity of getting into the Grand Final.

“We will be getting players back from injury and that will give us a lot more strength so there is no reason why we can’t achieve those things. But we need to keep our feet on the ground and get down to business.”

And does knowing Daniel is leaving at the end of the season give the players extra incentive?

“No offense to Daniel but we are not thinking about it. We are aware of it, and it would be great to finish off in a winning way, but that would be the case if he wasn’t going.

“Over the last few years, we have created a winning environment at the Club and it is no different this year to last year.

“Of course it would be nice to send him home with a winning medal and there will be no lack of effort to achieve that.”

Saints expect to have Chris Flannery and Lee Gilmour back in the reckoning this Friday which will give the opportunity to rest players if possible.
