Saints Academy beat Harlequins 108-0

5th Apr 2008, 4:18pm

St Helens Junior Academy 108 v 0 Junior Academy

By Graham Henthorne, Team Manager.

Saints began their assault on a third Grand Final in three years with a 20 try demolition of Harlequins at sunny Knowsley Road on Saturday.

Far from steamrollering through the Quins, Saints played some sparkling Rugby League.

Martin Wareing headed the try scoring with a nap hand of five tries.

There were hat-tricks apiece for both Phil Baines and Jonny Lomax, while Jack Bradbury, Tommy Johnson and Matty Ashurst grabbed two tries each.

Karl Ashall, Sean Magennis and Andy Yates also got in on the act with touchdowns.

Jamie Foster only managed to convert 14 of the tries.

Graham said: “As one observer noted this was perhaps the best performance ever from the Junior Academy. In fact, one unnamed member of the coaching staff did remark that Sean Magennis should have been sent off for being too big and Jonny Lomax should have been sent off for being too good!

“This should send out all sorts of alarm bells ringing within the ranks of the rest of the Gillette Academy. Despite all the personnel called to serve higher up in the organisation, the Saints mean business again.”
