Twelve Try Saints Reserves Demolish Quins

A commanding display from half backs Gary Wheeler and Kyle Eastmond who both repeatedly tore holes in the fragile Quins defensive line enabled the Reserves to pile up the points in the unfamiliar surroundings of West Park Rugby Club.

Dominant running from prop Sam Thompson and second row Sean Magennis meant that try as they might Quins were never able to get to grips with the Saints.

22 – 0 up after only 16 minutes thanks to tries from Kyle and Magennis (the first of their respective hat-tricks), one a piece from Dean McGilvray and Kurt Haggerty and three Tyrer goals, gave the Saints a lead that was never seriously threatened.

A sloppy ten minute period let the Quins in for two soft tries but a good push from Liam Blanfd off the bench set up the field position for Magennis and Wheeler to tear into the opposition ranks only for Kyle to pop up in support to dance past the fullback and touchdown under the sticks.

The second half was a different story as the Reserves tightened their defence up and really put the Quins to the sword.

A good break from Magennis fed Chris Dean who took three over for the first of his brace of tries. Then Kyle started and finished the move that gave him his hat-trick as his wide ball set Tyrer on a run down the left. On reaching the fullback he fed it back inside to Kyle who sprinted to the sticks.

Wheeler’s bullet of a miss pass put Paul Johnson through a massive whole to score in the corner. Then he turned provider with a gem of a pass off the floor and out of a tackle to set Magennis free.

Quins scored their only points of the half as Dean McGilvray dropped a high bomb before he made amends with a quick play the ball allowing Andy Stott to feed the charging Magennis who completed his hat-trick.

Two converted tries in the final four minutes to Haggerty and Chris Dean came after some wonderful support of the initial break from Wheeler, Kyle and Dixon.

All in all a very classy display from a side that was clearly chomping at the bit after having been denied a chance to play for the past two weeks.
