KYLE Eastmond admits it can be frustrating waiting for first team opportunities but says he is ready to take the chance when it comes.
“It can be,” the 19-year-old said, “but you need to get your head down, come in and do your training. Then, if the chance comes, you have to take it and hope you hold it down.”
Eastmond has made five appearances this season and is many pundits’ tip to replace Sean Long who is Hull bound for 2010.
“We have some real quality young players here at the Club and of course there is a bit of banter when one gets into the first team”, he continued. “Wheels [Gary Wheeler] and Chris Dean talk to each other like they are experienced players and wind each other up. But when they go out onto the pitch, we all want them to do well. We want them to do a good job for the team.
“Everyone brings something different to the team, and it is up to Mick [Potter] to pick the players he thinks are right to do the job. When you get your chance, it is important to take it and then hold it down.
“The senior players have done their business and don’t have to prove anything, but we have to prove to them we are good players.”
Some of Kyle’s appearances this season have been on the wing – displaying the type of versatility that Potter expects.
“We are all young players, playing for the best club in Super League. If Mick asks me to play on the wing, well... I am playing there. It doesn’t matter to us young lads where we are playing at all.
“I know against Harlequins I came I swapped with Leon Pryce and came inside. That was good as it showed the confidence Mick had in me to have a go around the middle.”
Kyle is expected to take his place in the 17 this Friday against Castleford and is expecting a good but tough game.
“The Saints’ fans are awesome and it is great to be back at home,” he added. “Castleford are a great attacking team who throw the ball around with confidence. We know it is going to be tough but we won’t change how we play. Hopefully, we will have a good night and get a good win.
Tickets for the clash, which kicks off at 8pm, are now on sale and you can save £1.50 by advance booking your ticket by Thursday.
