Reserves Pile up the Points

23rd Jul 2009, 3:12pm

St Helens Reserve Team 70 v 4 Wakefield Reserve Team

By Graham Henthorne, Team Manager

The Reserves consolidated their position as title contenders with a twelve try display over a Wakefield side that probably didn’t deserve to be on the end of such a scoreline.

Five tries in the first quarter put the Reserves up by 28 points and the game was over as a contest.

Tom Armstrong opened the scoring after Liam Bostock had been held up over the line and from the restart the Saints ploughed their way downfield for Jamie Ellis to send Jake Emmitt in unopposed.

Armstrong was again held up and from the restart Jamie Ellis caught the visitors napping running it in from dummy half.

A great 40/20 from Ellis gave the Saints field position for Warren Thompson to squeeze in at the corner for the fourth try of this wonderful spell.

Losing influential hooker and skipper Liam Bostock could have been a problem for the Saints but deputy Karl Ashall stepped off the bench to great effect and it was his ball that put the prolific try scoring prop forward Danny Cooper on another of his devastating 2 metre bursts to score under the posts.

As the half wore on the Reserves got a little sloppy giving the Wildcats field position and allowed them to score a soft try.

Jamie Foster was denied a try of his own again being held over the line but from the play the ball Ashall dove over.

With the last play of the half a pin point accurate cross kick from Ellis was gathered for the score by Dave Sutton but the touch judge ruled a knock on and the try was ruled out.

The second half saw more of the same. Armstrong got his second after a good drive from Andy Yates and Phil Baines took advantage of a repeat set to bust a tackle for his first try for a while.

The game had started to drift but as the visitors began to tire in the final 15 minutes the Saints piled on the pressure. Ashall scored his second again dummying over at the play the ball and Armstrong would have had a hat-trick but for a forward pass from Paul Johnson.

Martin Waring picked up a loose ball to go on a bewilderingly weaving 95 metre run and tries from Jake Emmitt and Paul Johnson gave the score a little flattering look.

Jamie Foster blotted his copybook missing the easiest of his 9 goal attempts but treated us to a majestic display of goal kicking with the other 8.

This was a scrappy performance from a side which can, and will have to, play better in the coming weeks. But if you can score 70 points when not at your best then there is something to work on.
