St Helens Scholarship U16s 46 v 16 Harlequins Scholarship U16s
The Saints Scholarship U16’s started their campaign with a comfortable win against a game Harlequins side at the GPW on Thursday evening.
Six tries in the first period saw the Saints always in control on the scoreboard but a rather lacklustre second half allowed the visitors to gain a foothold into the game.
Leon Tatlock opened the scoring with five minutes gone finishing well in the corner after a good drive by Connor Dwyer.
Brad Ashurst was denied a try, knocking on when stretching to put the ball down, after good approach work from himself and Dwyer again.
But he did get on the score sheet minutes later charging over the line from close range. Good hands from Greg Wild had put Chris Webster to within inches and a quick play the ball saw Ashurst free.
A knock on from the pin point accurate Quins kick off gave the visitors a scrum on the Saints 10 metre line. Four sallies to the left saw the Saints defence stretched out right and the Quins winger opened their account.
Dom Speakman darted over from dummy half for his first try. Webster and Danny Yates had been stopped just short and a quick play the ball gave Speakman the space to score.
For his second he treated us to the dummy of the century. Lewis Foster went 40 metres after breaking through the Quins line before being brought down 10 metres short. Two tackles later Speakman got the ball at first receiver and sent everybody, coaching staff included, looking to the right corner before strolling in unopposed to the line.
The lead was stretched to 20 points with Tatlock’s second of the evening. Dwyer picked up a loose ball and drove 30 metres with four Quins vainly trying to bring him down. A series of overhead offloads eventually saw the ball in Tatlock’s hands and he again finished bravely in the corner.
The last try of the half was a bit of a smash and grab from Hayden Jones. Yates’s last tackle kick was well chased by Jones who stole the ball from the Quins defender one-on-one over the line. The conversion from Jack Jones brought up the 30 points.
The second half was a much more competitive affair as the visitors started to finds their feet prompted by the moving of hooker Thomas to full back and Keen coming off the bench to dummy half.
Indecisiveness in the Saints defence allowed Quins to follow up a grubber, win possession and score.
On the next set the Saints forced the error and from the scrum on the Quins 20 Jordan Haughton made up for his earlier error by scoring in the right corner.
The visitors willing prop scored a deserved try diving in from close range after the Saints defence had been caught on its heels.
Chris Webster was denied a try by dropping the ball in the act of grounding after great work from Ashurst and James Tilley had put him through a yawning gap.
The prop made up for it by taking a great pass from the destructive Ashurst and bursting through the line. Taking it to the full back he waited for Cory Lee to catch him up and put the full back in the clear to go the final 30 to the posts.
The final act of the game fell to Brad Ashurst to score his second of the game. Jones went close in the left corner before the ball was spread right for the big prop to charge over.
For a first game of the season this was a pleasing display. Jake Shoel and Nathan Skupski did well out wide, there were good contributions off the bench from David Dale, Jamie Tracey and Adam Hesketh but best for the Saints were Ashurst and Dwyer.
The Saints would like to pay tribute and send their best wishes to Dom Speakman, Danny Yates, Brad Ashurst, Lewis Foster, and Lewis Galbraith (U15) all of whom have been chosen to play for England over in France this weekend. Mark Percival was selected but is unfortunately unable to play through injury.
