MAN of the Match scrum half Danny Yates was the cornerstone of this latest impressive performance from the Saints Academy as they turned over Wakefield 42-20 in their own barn writes Graham Henthorne, Team Manager.
He was involved in everything and was rewarded with a hat-tick of tries for his efforts.
It was Yates who opened the scoring backing up Adam Barber’s short side break to go under the posts.
Wakefield equalised but that was as good as it got as Yates took the game away from the home side.
A scrum move between Yates and his half back partner Dom Speakman put Corey Lee away and the speedy full back made no mistake touching down for the first of his brace.
Yates then put the impressive Joe Greenwood over with a ball down the short side then scored the fourth of the half himself.
A score shorthanded is always a bonus so Yates’s show and go was particularly welcome during Alex Clare’s sin binning.
The Wildcats had found it increasingly difficult to handle the power of the Saints pack and this was never more evident than at the start of the second period as substitute Jack Francis burst through the home defensive line. As he looked around who should be there but the ever present Danny Yates to complete an excellent hat-trick.
The wheels came off for a short period of time as the home side enjoyed a brief respite scoring two tries but normal service was soon resumed.
Corey Lee scored his second finishing off a length of the field move that started with Yates and Speakman at a scrum deep in Saints territory.
Callum Welsby showed that the Saints can score closer to the line diving over at dummy half before Adam Barber scored a deserved touchdown after another 80 metre move.
