Wilkin: We Look Sharp

JON Wilkin is pleased with the way preseason is shaping up but knows the real measure will be a good start to the campaign.

The back-rower says the players look as sharp as they’ve done for a number of years and are confident with their progression.

“It was been a good preseason and Nathan (Brown) and Jamahl (Lolesi) have come in and brought some new ideas,” he said. “We have trained with good intensity and seem to be very sharp but we know there is a lot of work ahead of us.

“It’s good being sharp in training but if it doesn’t equate to good form on the field then it’s a waste of time. Everything seems to be building in the right direction though and we are confident with our preparation.

“The biggest change for me has been in our training methods. We are taking a lot of time to consider if we are fully recovered for the next session so we can do that at 100 per cent. We want to be very good every time we train.”

Wilkin, 28, missed out on international duty through injury and whilst that was disappointing, it’s meant a full preseason under his belt for the first time in a number of years.

“I do feel sharper,” he added. “As players one of our gripes is we would all like more time to prepare so this has been a good opportunity. I feel fresh and more mentally fresh too.

“I like to keep myself busy off the field to keep my mind fresh, whether that’s with the media, my coffee shop, the Players Association or my Testimonial and I’d like to think I manage both well.

“The Testimonial is a nice distraction to have and I have been blown away by the support from fans and sponsors. It’s weird reflecting on a career because I still feel I have so much more to achieve. It has been an honour to be at this club for ten seasons and I owe it and the supporters a lot.”
