Ladies Tackle The Ben

SEVEN intrepid Saints ladies are gearing up for an assault on Britain’s highest peak – all in the aid of charity.

Marisa Hohaia, Natasha Roby, Gemmah Soliola and Rachel Wellens will join Kim Hill (Ade Gardner’s partner), Jess Heuerman (Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook) and Megan Mousdale (Jon Wilkin) in raising vital funds for ‘Life For A Kid’.

The route up Ben Nevis will see them trek around 11 miles and ascend more than 4,409 ft. (1,344m) in the challenge.

Marisa Hohaia said: “We heard about the event and the charity from some friends in Leeds and Hull who had also signed up to take part. We touched base with the event organiser for more information and when we realised how many women from across Super League will be taking part and what an amazing cause the trek is supporting, we felt compelled to represent Saints and contribute to children in need.

“The children and families receiving support from Life For A Kid endure physical, emotional and financial challenges that are nothing short of tragic and difficult for most to imagine.

“We are all lucky enough to have healthy children at home and hence felt a strong sense of compassion toward their stories and a strong motivation to help. It will also be a once in a lifetime opportunity to really challenge ourselves physically and probably have some good laughs along the way.

“We have a lot of training to do but we are enjoying the preparation so far and the satisfaction that comes from every pound raised.”

The Life For A Kid Foundation was set up in March 2009 with the aim of helping children under the age of 16 by offering funds and equipment for better life – and to support those requiring lifesaving or life-changing operations.

For example, they bought an iPad for a visually impaired five-year-old girl from Flintshire with brain damage and severe epilepsy to help her continue her education.

Three-year-old Grace Pamela Docherty was diagnosed with Leukaemia in 2011 and the Life For A Kid Foundation teamed up with one of the charity’s Patrons, Lee Radford, to organise two big boxing events and raise £10,750.

The money is being used to support the family through this tough period with travel costs to and from the hospital and also support the parents to have time off work to support the little girl.
