Loanee Enjoying Time

GARETH O’Brien is enjoying his time at Saints.

The Warrington half-back joined the Club on a month’s loan after being somewhat of a rugby league nomad over the last two seasons.

At 21, he’s already played for the Wolves, Castleford, Widnes and Swinton.

“I played a few games for Warrington last season and was surprised at how many really,” he said. “I’m proud of what I did but that is in the past now. This year I’ve been with Castleford and Swinton and I have a lot of respect for the dual reg system and what it is trying to achieve.

“In the end though it doesn’t matter what shirt I play in I will give it my all.

“When I got the opportunity to come over here I wasn’t going to turn it down and I have to thank Browny for the chance. I am enjoying it at present.

“I’m a young half back who is learning every day and picking things up. I’ve had a few loan spells but I enjoy it. It’s great to meet new players and get game time at the highest level. That is important for me.

“I know there were a few eyebrows raised at the move – the two clubs are rivals – but I don’t see it that way. This was an opportunity to go to a big club and get games under my belt.”

Gareth has played twice for Saints so far in his loan spell – away at Huddersfield after a couple of training runs and at home against Bradford.

“I was happy with the game against the Bulls,” he continued. “We prepared well and played some good stuff. Jonny Lomax and James Roby were in the line-up and that helped our attack. I felt we left a lot of points out there though but it was good to get the win.

“Browny encouraged us to play what we could see and although they got close at one point the character of the boys meant we stuck it out.

“We were never worried we wouldn’t get the two points though.

“It was an important game for us to get into the eight, but for the home fans too. Now we have to move forward and prepare well for our trip to Salford. They will get the respect they deserve and we know it won’t be an easy game.

“We will analyse what they do, prepare well and I’m sure it will be a good contest.”
