Johnny Vegas has directed a feature-length version of David Storey’s 1960s northern drama especially for Radio 4 which tells the story of rugby league player Frank Machin from Wakefield.
Vegas wanted some raw sounds for the programme and so enlisted the help of the Saints.
A team from Woolyback Productions visited first team training to get sounds of balls being kicked, players running and full blooded tackles.
At one point Jon Wilkin was running up and down the field with a contraption around himself to provide the sound effects of boots on grass.
