Wilkin: Good Start

JON Wilkin was pleased with Saints start to the new season but says they need to remain focused.

The second rower was part of the side that beat Warrington 38-8 on Thursday.

“It was a good performance but you can’t read much into the opening round of the year,” he said. “We wanted to start well and we did. There’s no use projecting about this team and where we can go though. I have been in teams that have been fancied before and we haven’t done the business.

“What we need to do is win as many games as can and get to the big games… that is what very team wants to do.”

Wilko was at the hub of a pack that got the better of Warrington’s forwards allowing Luke Walsh to do the damage at 7.

“The pack did well,” he continued. “But the challenge for us is when we don’t have as much of the ball. Our size and strength then becomes a weakness as it can mean we aren’t as mobile. We will be paying attention to that in the coming weeks.

“With the lion’s share of possession we are as good as any pack in the competition.

“Luke Walsh’s contribution to the win can’t be underestimated though. His ruthless attention to the game plan made a lot of difference.

“We’ve needed a seven for three four years; Luke is a 7 and I am thankful I don’t have to do it anymore!”

Saints next test will come on Friday February 21 when they take on Hull FC.
