PAUL Wellens says the Tetley’s Challenge Cup Fourth Round clash with Huddersfield will be a great occasion – but the players can’t focus on it just yet.
Saints will take on the Giants on the weekend of April 5/6 but have First Utility Super League games with Wakefield and Leeds to negotiate first.
“It will be a tough tie and Huddersfield are a fantastic team,” he said. “We know they are a good side and they proved that last season by being consistent and winning the League Leaders Shield.
“It will be a real challenge but one we will prepare well for and embrace. I’m sure it will make for a great occasion.
“We can’t focus on it just yet though; as players we need to always look at the next game and as captain of this team I have to make sure we do that.
“The coaches will be planning ahead, looking at team selection and what is needed but we as players have to focus on what we have been doing and maintaining this good start.”
Wellens and Saints travel to Wakefield on Sunday to take on the Wildcats.
“With key personnel missing the challenge will be harder but what we have at Saints this season is strength in depth,” Paul added. “This will give others the opportunity to stake a claim. We won’t be lacking in effort, commitment and motivation.
“We have started strong, which we haven’t done for the last couple of seasons and have confidence moving forward. We can’t get carried away though as we have improvement in us to get better performances going forward.”
