Brown Pleased With Response

NATHAN Brown was pleased with the response as Saints beat Huddersfield 41-22.

His side ran in seven tries to defeat the full-strength Giants and stay one point behind Leeds in the Super League table.

“The guys did well in response to last week’s game and the manner in which we started it was pleasing from a defensive point of view,” he said. “We wanted the experienced players to set a good standard and the young blokes followed on and tagged along. Tonight we set the tone from the off and when you do that things often fall your way. Bounces go your way and you start to make luck too.

“I was pleased with how we got the physical part of the game right – and they have a physical pack. We had nine or ten that didn’t play and we lost Luke Thompson too. The guys stuck to the task physically and their effort and commitment for each other was great.

“I thought the scoreline flattered them a little. They got a try from the kick off and a bounced one too so defensively that was our best performance against some good opposition for a while.”

Mose Masoe produced his best show to date whilst Paul Wellens was excellent too.

“Mose arrived with a lower limb injury and took some time to get going but tonight he probably showed why we brought him to the club. He has set a good standard for himself now because they are a good pack.

“Paul is a great competitor and I don’t think anyone can doubt what he brings to the team. When he is on the field we seem to have something going for us and his leadership is first class.

“It was good to see Gary Wheeler too. His challenge is now to do it next week. He had Jason Chan and Leroy Cudjoe opposite him and he did well. The big challenge now is for him to make sure he comes up again.”

He continues: “Now we have to keep working because we are not the finished article. We have got to deliver a top physical performance next week.

“We are developing as a team and to do what we did with nine or ten out against a full strength Huddersfield was good. We don’t want to be third or fourth though and we are aware there are parts of our game we need to be better in against the bigger clubs.”
