SAINTS U19s emulated their senior counterparts with a tremendous 14-12 win over their deadliest rivals today writes Graham Henthorne.
Hot on the heels of the first team’s dramatic 16-12 victory the night before, the youngsters produced a performance of skill, passion and guile to complete the ‘double’.
Despite a 5 – 0 penalty count against the Saints keeping their hosts in the game, the much younger 19s – compared to their counterparts – managed to go in level at the break.
Tries either side of the interval from Matty Fleming and the tireless Morgan Knowles put the Saints on the scoresheet but it was the kicking of Lewis Charnock and Dave Hewitt which ultimately won it.
In game like this it’s often the forwards who give the team a chance and the backs who win it and this was no exception.
Fresh from his second impressive outing with the First Team last week André Savelio led his fellow forwards from the front. But he was ably supported by the tough tackling second row duo of Liam Cooper and Olly Davies who has regained his form and is fulfilling his promise.
Again the pick of the backs was Jake Spedding who continues to improve and impress.
A fabulous team performance which should give all who took part so much confidence for the rest of the campaign.
Ask yourselves this Saints fans, after the disappointment of Easter, does it get much better than this?
