Walsh Thanks Fans

LUKE Walsh has thanked the fans for their superb support following his season-ending leg break.

The scrum-half suffered the freak injury in the win over Widnes in July.

But he’s now on the mend after an operation – and has even been in the gym training with his teammates.

“The cast comes off shortly and then I’ll have a boot on for four weeks and I can get back walking,” he said. “It wasn’t as bad as we first feared but it will be a long process. It’s been a frustrating year as I’ve had a few injuries but this certainly is the biggest of my career.

“I broke my leg, a bit of ankle too and tore some ligaments but the bit (of my ankle) that came out wasn’t broken, just dislocated, so it has been a pretty good outcome.

“When I first saw it I thought that was it, it was my career over. I was thinking all sorts of stuff. But thankfully it was ok.

“I can’t thank the fans enough. Ever since I have been here they have been unbelievable. All the support I’ve had since the injury has been crazy. I’ve had people coming up to me saying get well and it has surprised me.

“I can’t thank them enough; they are the best fans I’ve been involved with.”

He continued: “It (the injury) was devastating from a team point of view. We had everyone back on the field then me, Jonny Lomax and Jon Wilkin got injured. It’s harder with the playoffs coming too. But I still think we can do it.

“We have a great forward pack and classy outside backs. There is no doubt we can do it on the big stage but it will take a lot of hard work. There is no doubt we have the best forward pack in the comp and if they stand up then anything can happen.

“I will be watching and cheering them on but I’m not a good watcher.”

Luke joined Saints in the off-season from Penrith and instantly showed fans why the club brought him over.

He was superb in the opening day win over Warrington and his acute half back play masterminded several other vital victories.

“It’s been good,” he said. “I settled well as did the family and the little fella. It took a little while during pre-season but it was pretty easy once I started playing. My partner Tyler got to know the other girls well and it helped having Mose (Masoe) over too. He is a character and it was good to have him around. He’s starting to hit some form too, which we need him to.

“Ever since I’ve been here the people have been great have been real nice.

“I’ll go home after the Grand Final to do my rehab and recovery and then return for some of pre-season. I’ve already been around the boys and into training. I’ve been doing weights and stuff. I’m sure the injury shouldn’t take too long to sort out.”
