TOMMY Makinson says Saints’ loyal supporters deserved better than the side produced in the World Club Challenge.
The winger was disappointed with his and the team’s performance against South Sydney and vowed to put things right on Friday.
“It was a bad game and although it seemed like every bounce of the ball went their way, you can’t take anything away from them,” he said. “There were a few strange decisions across the three games. I know it’s tough though and I certainly couldn’t be a referee.
“That said, take nothing away South Sydney; we could have had as many refereeing decisions as we would have liked, but when you give the ball away as much as we did then you aren’t going to win. They were great, clinical and ruthless.
“It was massively frustrating for us. We had them on the ropes a couple of times but didn’t give ourselves the opportunities. We didn’t give ourselves a chance and when you drop the ball and give the best players in the world the chance they will score.
“Last year’s Grand Final was a step up for me. It was the biggest game in my career and Sunday was a step up from that. It is what international rugby is like but I don’t want to remember it. Hopefully I will get the chance again.
“I want to go on and hopefully achieve international honours; to do that I will have to play a lot better against players of that calibre.”
He continued: “The fans are a great bunch. Before and after every game they are here, they don’t boo, and as a result we want to win for them. When they are behind you it is amazing. We saw a lot of that on Sunday so to put in a poor performance was disappointing. They deserve better and that starts Friday.
“We saw last year how good a side Castleford were. They lost at Catalan by a point and lost to Wakefield by a couple of points too. They have great players across the park.”
