Wilkin: Intense Occasion

SAINTS skipper Jon Wilkin is only too aware of the importance of this Friday’s clash with Wigan Warriors.

And he’s expecting another intense occasion and another classic.

“It is a huge game,” he said. “When the fixtures come out you look forward to Good Friday and look at what is coming before. You build up form for that derby.

“It has always been a standout game for me in the time I have played here. It is the most enjoyable game of the year barring those big games at the end of the year and at Old Trafford.

“Every time you play at the DW the intensity of the atmosphere creates a response from the players – you get the aggression and intensity off the back of that crowd.

“The best games in Super League are the ones with high attendances and loud crowds. They always produce the best rugby and it is something we need to recreate across the board. Nailed on Saints v Wigan is always a classic game.”

He continued: “I have no doubt this one will be an intense and aggressive game. We will take it to Wigan and rip into them as we do every week. The difference is this game means more to the fans and as a result there will need to be a reaction from us.

“We take on Hull after that and they seem to be struggling to score points. But they have good half backs and it will be a hard game. You won’t see the best of either side; it’s a case of toughing the game out and getting the result.

“Easter Monday is one of the most satisfying games of the year – putting in a dogged performance, after backing up, to get through.”
