JAMES Roby is looking to use last year’s Super League Grand Final success to spur his side on to victory in Sunday’s Ladbrokes Challenge Cup quarter-final against Widnes Vikings at Langtree Park on Sunday (4pm).
The hooker was part of the last Saints team to hoist the Challenge Cup in 2008 and believes their achievements can be the confidence booster needed for a first trip to Wembley in eight years.
“We’re always out to win every trophy that’s on offer,” he said. “I think we can use the Grand Final win last year as motivation in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup to get to Wembley.
“We went through a bit of adversity last year with the injuries we had, so if we can replicate what we did last year in Super League for the Cup this season then hopefully it will help us reach Wembley.”
St Helens host last year’s beaten semi-finalists Widnes on Sunday afternoon in the last of the quarter-final fixtures and Roby has rich experiences in Rugby League’s oldest Cup competition.
“I’ve got some fantastic memories from winning the Challenge Cup,” he continued. “There’s something about the whole feel to it. – It’s magical. The whole preparation of going down to London a few days before the final and walking out at Wembley which is such a fantastic stadium makes the Challenge Cup such a special occasion.
“Watching the Cup as a kid you always dream one day that it’s you walking out on that pitch and lifting the trophy.
“We have to beat Widnes first if we’re to have any chance of getting there, though. It won’t be easy but I’m sure plenty of fans will turn up on Sunday from both clubs to cheer their side on.”
