Rebels Announce New Head Coach

SAINTS partner club Cornish Rebels RLFC will have a new face at the helm of their South West Men’s League title defence this summer, in the form of newly appointed First Team Coach Mike Abbott.

Originally from Haydock in Merseyside, teacher Mike has spent time coaching rugby league at various levels, before moving to Truro recently for work, along with his family.

Rebels Chairman John Beach says that everyone is keen to get started: “For us, this couldn’t have come at a better time. Mike got in contact via our partnership with St Helens RLFC and made it clear he was a Rugby League man, wanting to be involved with the club.

“We have a big season ahead and some trophies to win, but also win back and we think having Mike’s knowledge and wealth of experience on board will help us greatly in that regard.”

Abbott is delighted to be able to put his skills to good use in his new home, something he didn’t expect he would be able to do.

“I’ve landed on my feet! Coaching Rugby League in Cornwall is great for me, and I look forward to meeting the players and working with them to improve and continue to build a team that we can all be proud of,” he said.

Craig Richards Saints Coach Development Lead added: “It’s great that Mike in on board with the rebels, we look forward to supporting him in his new Head Coach role”

The Rebels are appealing to new players aged 16 and over to come along to Redruth RFC on April 6 to sign for the club, with Mike taking his first session as head coach the following Wednesday April 13.

The season begins with a trip to Exeter for the annual South West 9s competition where the Rebels will defend their title ahead of the regular season kick-off the following week.
