Wilkin: Fighting For Fans

JON Wilkin says Saints will be fighting hard for the fans when they take on Warrington this Friday.

The club captain acknowledges it has been a tough month at Langtree Park but the players are determined to put things right.

And that focus has to be on execution and putting chances to bed when they come.

“Hull played with composure (last Friday) – our composure and execution was the difference between the sides,” he said. “We tried hard but ultimately in Super League that isn’t good enough to win games. You need composure and a little bit of luck. They had that.

“Effort wise we are there but our execution isn’t. Maybe we need to understand the best way for us to play. We have new combinations in the team and we are decimated in the outside backs. It takes time to gel but we need to find a way to win games when we haven’t got our personnel on the field.

“We need to find a way to win when we aren’t playing well.

“We aren’t where we want to be – we aren’t winning games. We want to be the aggressors at home and dominating sides but we haven’t done that in our last two home games. The fans feel that and we can sense it on the pitch. They are frustrated as they want to be entertained. It is our job to do that.”

He continued: “We’re looking forward to the game at Warrington. Their recruitment has brought in players who have got some experience on the ball. Sandow has been great, Gidley has been exceptional and that has helped Ratchford and Clark. I think Matty Russell has been exceptional too and is always dangerous with the ball.

“But the focus is on us. We need to match our effort with good execution. The effort gets us far but we need to be clinical at the right times. That’s the ball players – me included – selecting the right kick and pass at the right time. It’s about that game sense.

“It has been a tough month for us and we know the fans are hurting. No one is hurting more than the players are though. We will be fighting for the fans at the Halliwell Jones. We have been written off before and have always come back. We will come back this time too and we will have some part to play this year for sure.”
