KEIRON Cunningham was understandably proud of his players following their 25-22 win at Warrington – and paid tribute to his youngsters and Theo Fages.
Saints produced a performance of real guile and class to topple the league leaders, even though they were missing eight first team regulars.
“I thought it was the same committed performance we have put together for the last three games but we were unlucky last week against Hull FC,” he said. “If you’re persistent with that and do the right things then you make your own luck in rugby league.
“And that is what we did tonight.
“We were on the end of some tough calls in that first half. There was a 6-2, 7-2 penalty count which was disappointing but we fought against that, came back and then kept hold of a lead. I am so proud of my players.
“I thought the young boys were immense. Morgan Knowles is something else and you are yet to see the best of him. We threw him out there and he was outstanding. He played 50-60 minutes.
“Jake (Spedding) on the wing didn’t let anyone down too and did a solid job against some good outside backs – and Jack Ashworth took his try well too.
“These are the games kids want to play in. As coaches you’d rather go in with a full acquisition but kids remember these games. It develops them and gives them character. It makes them the players they will be in the future.”
He continued: “Theo Fages is coming of age. Without singing his praises too much when we initially had the opportunity to sign him I told the chairman he would be the Club’s number 7 for next 12 or so years if we could afford to keep him.
“On tonight’s game he showed just how good a player he is at such a young age. With the right people around him, doing the right things, he is someone who can take you the right places.”
Saints are next in action this coming Thursday April 14 at Langtree Park when they host Catalan Dragons.
