KEIRON Cunningham spoke to the press following Saints’ 47-18 loss to Hull FC.
“I haven’t got the words to explain the way I am feeling at the minute,” he said. “The first half really hurt us. They won two penalties, then got back to back tries. The young kid then gets wide and as a result we were chasing our tail a little bit.
“We lost the ruck and didn’t do the fundamentals around that area well. We have been doing well in that area recently.
“But all credit to them, they played well.
“It was embarrassing at certain times down the middle and it’s difficult to put a finger on why that was. We trained really well during the week and have been building some combinations too over the last two weeks.
“But today we were really poor defensively. They are the areas we work on the hardest so it is very frustrating for us.
“We have to try and find something and kick on into the next part of the competition. We have a big game on Friday night now.”
He continued: “Even when we were behind you always think you can do something and come back.
“But we lost the energy battle early in the game and that had a knock on effect.
“We had a foothold at times but our defence was poor – especially our one on one defence. That is a mental thing we have to address.
“We will see how we scrub up during the week – then get out there to try and right a few wrongs.”
