KC: No Resting On Laurels

KEIRON Cunningham said the win over Widnes was one of his side’s best defensive displays of the season.

Saints beat the Vikings 21-8 to secure their tenth victory in eleven games.

“It was one of our best defensive performances of the year,” he said. “We have been getting better each week in that part of our game and then we go to Widnes, one of the best attacking sides in the comp, and do well.

“They have a lot of threat – Rhys Hanbury, their two nines and the middles – right across the park. We gave them plenty of chances on our line for sure.

“Perhaps the scoreline didn’t reflect the game as I thought we were by far the better side. We broke through twice and put the ball down twice. If we score there then I think that would have been a fairer reflection of the game.”

Saints end their Super 8s campaign at home to Wakefield this Friday with a semi-final spot already secured.

But Cunningham says there will be no resting on laurels this week.

“We want to put on a real good showing this week at Langtree,” he said. “We have had some super support, especially at the back end of the season, and away from here they have brought us home on lots of occasions.

“We want it to be as entertaining as it possibly can this week. If you rest on your laurels you can get burnt and Ches (Chris Chester) has already told me that they are coming here to play and throw the ball around.

“We know if we aren’t on the money then those teams will beat you.

“Our objective is to win; sometimes you do that ugly and sometimes pretty. We are happy with where we are heading and have picked up some nice wins on the way. We have had some superb performances against big sides too.

“We have lost one game in the Super 8s so are coming into form at the right time.”

Cunningham said Jonny Lomax is 100 per fine and will be considered for selection this week but Greg Richards and Adam Swift will miss the game because of head injuries sustained in the win at Widnes.

Joe Greenwood will also be available after submitting an Early Guilty Plea. He was charged with Grade A punching following the win at Widnes.
