KEIRON Cunningham has been spelling out his plans for Sunday’s Karalius Cup tie with Widnes Vikings.
Saints take to the Totally Wicked Stadium surface for the first time in 2017 in the traditional match which celebrates the life of former great Vince Karalius.
“We have done a lot of opposed sessions in training but it is always good to take it into a game situation,” Cunningham said. “We are all ready for a game and we are excited for it.
“We will use around 28 to 29 players; starting the game strong and finishing with some juniors from the first team squad. All those kids deserve their shot – to a man they have trained well and we couldn’t have asked for any more from them.
“Only Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook is unavailable as he had surgery at the back end of last season.
“The game will give me a good idea at where we are at. Pre-season can be deceiving because you can think you’re a little behind where you are.
“Things have gone well with the squad and the game will give us a good idea as to who is good in which spots and who starts in the front row.”
All five of Saints new signings are expected to play in the match and that means fans will be able to see Luke Douglas (pictured), Adam Walker, Ryan Morgan, Tommy Lee and Matty Smith for the first time in their new colours.
He continued: “This will be Widnes’ third pre-season game so they are further ahead than us in that respect. We’re looking for a good showing, if we are heading in the right direction and if the boys have progressed from last year.
“We’re looking forward to the hit out as the season is around the corner!”
