WE may only be three games into the new season but Alex Walmsley is already showing the sort of form that saw him become part of the England set up.
With 395 metres in his one start and two sub appearances to date – and a try – the prop forward feels he is beginning to make up for, in his eyes, an ‘off’ 2016.
“I am happy with where I am considering where I was last season with my fitness, injuries and a lack of a pre-season,” he said. “I don’t make excuses but I was way off fitness wise, miles away. I have worked hard with our conditioner and he has put it to me.
“My fitness levels are back up there but I still feel I have a bit to go. I can go up a few more levels but I am quite happy with my start.
“I wasn’t happy last season at all. It wasn’t just about being on the field – it is what I bring on the field when I get there.”
Alex and his teammates head to Hull on Friday with two points from their three games to date and looking to kick start their season against a tough side.
And he is expecting a real tussle in the pack.
“Hull like to get stuck in for sure,” he added. “As a middle we need to be on our game. They were red hot against Huddersfield last week and that is what they are capable of.
“It is important we bring the storm this week as we need to match them in every single part of the park.
“The last two results have been disappointing but the mood of the camp is still positive. We have done enough in those last two games to win them. Minor details need sorting out quickly and we are doing what we can to iron them out.
“We are creating chances and opportunities but not putting teams to bed.
“You can’t take anything away from Leigh and Wakefield but we have done enough to win both games and that is hurting us most.”
