Saints Women play their first ever game this Sunday when they host York City Knights at Ruskin Drive.
The match kicks off at 2.30pm and excitement is building within the camp for the big debut.
“It is a really exciting week for us,” Head Coach Mark Brennan said. “For us to be the first women’s team to represent the club is not only a big thing for the Saints but the town and its heritage too. The girls are excited to be the first 17 players to represent the club.
“We want to keep the traditions of the Saints alive and have tried to embed some of those into the squad. We want to play a free flowing style and have introduced some of the same structures as the men’s team.
“We want the fans to support the women as much as they can. We want them to come down, see their qualities and then hopefully watch it grow over the next few seasons.”
Saints have recruited a number of players who represented England in the last World Cup including Faye Gaskin (pictured).
He continued: “The heritage and history of the club has helped us sign several top name players. It has been good to have a rapport with them over pre-season to get them in here, see the facilities and what we can offer.
“We have some players who have transferred their talent over from other sports and the likes of Roxy Mura who played in New Zealand. We have explosive outside backs too. There is quality all over the pitch and it will be interesting to see how they gel over the course of the season.
“We also have Jodie Cunningham and Jenny Welsby to come in too when they finish their rehab.”
Entry to the game is £2 for adults and free for under 16s.
Mark added: “It would be great to see you at Ruskin. Come down, meet the players and see your first glimpse of what we hope will be a successful season.
“It will be an exciting game on a fast dry surface.”
