Saints make it six wins from six

Saints made it six wins from six after a classy second half display resulted in 28 unanswered points and a 40-12 victory over Huddersfield Giants at the John Smith's Stadium on Thursday evening.

Luke Thompson set us on our way early on before Jermaine McGillvary responded for the hosts. Morgan Knowles put us back in front, but former Saint Jordan Turner squared up the game. Mark Percival restored Saints lead minutes before the interval before the Red Vee, playing in blue, took control in the second half.

Tries from Regan Grace and a second from Percival, was added to by a try from the excellent Dom Peyroux, before Jonny Lomax wrapped it up late on as Justin Holbrook’s men extended our one hundred percent start to the season.

Saints started the game on the front foot, after back to back penalties on Huddersfield’s line it was a short ball from Roby who fed Thompson which gave Saints an early 6-0 lead and Coote added the extras.

Huddersfield hit back through McGillvary after a flowing move on their right edge. Another former Saint Gaskell added the extras to level up the game.

Saints continued to pressure the Huddersfield line, but it was the final pass that eluded them until Roby found Knowles in the 22nd minute for him to score under the sticks giving Saints a 12-6 lead.

A determined Huddersfield side again pegged back Saints through Turner’s close range effort. Gaskell converted off the touch line to tie the game at 12-12 with 10 minutes left in the first half.

In the final minute of the first half an excellent move on Saints left edge lead to Lomax kicking through and Percival pounced to give Saints an 16-12 half time lead.

The second half started like the first, a tight affair. That was until Roby won a penalty under the sticks after the Giants tackler was penalised in the ruck. Coote added the two points and that was to be the start of a further 24 unanswered points.

From the resulting kick off, Coote decided to kick early and the ball stayed in touch by a whisker. The Saints forwards then trapped the Giants defence in goal before the ball was fumbled and Percival made no mistake to touch down, via help from the video ref. Coote added the extras.

Grace, fresh from signing his new Saints deal put the Red Vee further ahead with a brilliant score in the corner. The impressive Coote with a cut-out pass for the flying winger to go over.

Peyroux who was equally impressive then got his name on the score sheet. A high boot from Theo Fages found Tommy Makinson out wide and he palmed the ball back for Dom to power over for the try of the game. Coote again doing the rest.

Lomax then put the icing on the cake late on as the ball was played from left to right before the stand-off threw the dummy and scored to the left of the sticks. Coote added the two and Saints had hit the 40 point mark and kept the Giants to nil.

It’s the Tigers up next at the Jungle!
