Saints U19s beat Warrington

Saints U19’s produced a dominant display to triumph over near neighbours Warrington Wolves following a 32-4 victory to return to the top of the table.

The Wolves were just no match for a Saints side shorn of Jack Welsby on first team duty at short notice. The writing was on the wall as early as the fourth minute as Josh Simm scored the first of his brace.

A penalty for a very late shoulder charge on Ryan Horne gave Saints field position and drives from Chris Kellett and Kye Siyani put us on the front foot. The ball was swept to the right for Simm to go past two defenders to score.

Saints were doing our defensive chores as well as their attacking ones forcing a knock on from the Wolves in their half. From the scrum Saints took the play to the left, but on the last tackle an innocuous grubber from Horne mesmerised the defence allowing skipper Sam Royle to pick up and touch down.

Another big tackle on halfway from Siyani gave the Saints possession in Wolves territory and we again capitalised. From the scrum Tom Nisbett made good ground down the left before the play again found its way to the right. Twice in succession Paul Nash jumped blind to the right touchline tying up defenders before taking Simm’s speculative inside pass as he was pushed into touch to score the third try.

On quarter time Warrington were reduced to 12 as the winger was sinbinned for holding down Nisbett after a great 50 metre break. The chance came to nothing despite a mazy run from debutant Jumah Sambou.

The Wolves scored their only try as their fullback went 60 metres before being caught by John Hutchings. But from the play the ball they scored on the overlap where he should have been defending.

On the half hour normal service was resumed with a first try in the Red Vee for Warren Smith. The big prop has been improving with every game and he was rewarded charging in at the side of the posts after good runs from Nisbett and Lewis Dodd.

The game could have been so much different had the Wolves taken the two sitter tries in the opening 3 minutes of the second period. Twice passes were dropped with an open line in front, however, as all good teams do the Saints made the Wolves pay with Josh Simm picking up another loose ball on halfway and running it in for his second.

The Wolves were again reduced to 12, this time for dissent and again the Saints found it difficult to capitalise.

As soon as the 10 minutes elapsed though Sambou scored the Saints sixth try.

The Wolves had been on the attack chipping the Saints defensive line and regathering, but then kicked dead with the Saints scrambling to cover.

Three tackles on from the restart Nisbett and Simm went down the right. When Sambou picked up Simm’s loose pass there was nothing on but the winger jinked his way through beating off two tacklers to go in for his debut try in the red vee at this level.

The Saints toiled hard for the final quarter finishing with a flourish as Siyani, Lewis Baxter and Nico Rizzelli were all held up over the line.

This was a great win for the Saints who played large parts of the game with only 15 men but still came away with the win.
