On This Day: Saints 21-21 Wigan

Each day whilst we are all in Lockdown this week we will recall a famous match from the current day thanks to Saints Heritage Society.

9 APRIL – 2004

Super League R5: St. Helens 21-21 Wigan Warriors at Knowsley Road.

No love was lost between the two great rivals in this clash as the spoils were shared in a feisty fixture at Knowsley Road. Although Saints led 14-8, the visitors came back fighting and a Terry Newton try made it 20-20.

This pulsating encounter boiled over at one stage, but one of Saints’ successes that day was new signing Lee Gilmour [ex Bradford Bulls and Wigan Warriors], who scored two excellent tries. Lee was a superbly mobile footballer who could play in the centres or back row with great effectiveness.

With the game on a knife edge, tensions boiled over as Newton and Jon Wilkin shared punches in a ruck, sparking a 26-man brawl.

Once calm was restored, Wigan thought they had won it after Andy Farrell’s late drop goal but Saints legend Sean Long repeated the feat at the other end to rescue a point.

St Helens: Wellens, Albert, Hooper, Talau, Feaunati, Sculthorpe, Long, Fozzard, Cunningham, Edmondson, Gilmour, Joynt, Wilkin. Replacements: Gardner, Higham, Bibey, Mason.

Wigan: Radlinski, Aspinwall, Wild, Brown, Dallas, O’Loughlin, Orr, O’Connor, Newton, Pongia, Cassidy, Tickle, Farrell. Replacements: M. Smith, C. Smith, Hock, Sculthorpe.
