On This Day: Saints beat Bramley back in 1954

Each day whilst we are all in Lockdown this week we will recall a famous match from the current day thanks to Saints Heritage Society.

10 APRIL 1954

Northern Rugby League: Bramley 12-25 St Helens at Barley Mow.

It is always a good feeling for both players and fans to pick up two points in Yorkshire and this comfortable victory was no exception!

There were five Welshmen in the St.Helens ranks on that day: Glyn Moses, Steve Llewellyn, Reg Blakemore, George Parsons and Ray Cale.

The star of the show, however, was local-born stand-off Peter Metcalfe [pictured], who scored two tries and kicked 5 goals. His fellow half-back partner Jimmy Honey also scored a three-pointer, together with George Parsons and Bill Finnan.

As for Peter, he went on to score 21 tries and kick 145 goals in his 42 appearances during the season, resulting in county and international honours. A marvellous player, indeed.
