Each day whilst we are all in Lockdown this week we will recall a famous match from the current day thanks to Saints Heritage Society.
12 APRIL – 1968
Northern Rugby League: St. Helens 24-13 Wigan at Knowsley Road.
It was sheer ecstasy to get one over on our deadly rivals, of course, but with the added bonus of Tom van Vollenhoven scoring a glorious hat-trick in what was his last ‘derby’ clash in front of over 18,000 fans.
Billy Benyon, Alan Whittle and Welsh forward Bobby Wanbon scored Saints’ other touchdowns with Kel Coslett kicking three goals.
Everyone who saw Tom has their own special memories of the great man. In the featured image above he is being welcomed back at the Town Hall after his three-try performance against Hunslet after the 1959 Championship final.
Check out the team that played on that day here on Saints Heritage.
HAPPY EASTER SAINTS!
